Find Your Voice
Writing is a difficult profession. Most of us take it on because we just can’t see ourselves doing anything else. But we all need help on that journey. We need the ears and eyes of people we can trust to take our projects in the way that we, and more importantly, the projects themselves want to go. And I particularly look for those fresh new voices.
I love what I do, and I am passionate about helping get great books on the market. That’s my main goal.
I started writing at an early age and decided to take it on as a career. I got my BA in English and my MFA in creative writing from USC, worked as a newspaper editor editor for 3 years, a sports writer for 3 years, and taught writing at the university level for 11 years. For the past twelve years, I’ve been an acquisitions editor for a national press, and I’ve been lucky enough to be an editor for more than 400 published titles across several genres. I, particularly, specialize in developmental editing and have edited more than 300 titles on the developmental level. I have tons of experience and education across all levels of writing and publishing, and I want to use that to help other writers navigate their journeys.
I love writing, but I’ve found that I love helping others sharpen their skills more than I like my own words. So I put all that energy into my editing. Whether it’s an editorial assessment, copyedit or developmental edit, I try to see the work for what it wants to be. I’ve worked with a number of first-time authors as well as veterans, and I enjoy using my experience to give an educated opinion on each project.
My first goal is to have a good conversation with each client to understand their idea for the direction of the work. Then, we can decide the best fit for the work get what you need. There are too many great voices out there for them to go unheard. Let me use when I’ve learned to help you.
I’ve been on the journey on both sides, and I’ve spent quite a bit of tie studying the market.
